How to Heal Depression

How to Heal Depression

Depression, which comes in a variety of forms, affects millions of people all over the world. The disorder also doesn't choose age, gender, ethnicity, or social status. Worse, thousands die because of it.

This illness can come and go, but it doesn't mean it cannot be controlled. Because the disease is already very common, a lot of studies have been proven to be effective in dealing with it. Here are some of them:

Medications

Many of these medications work by increasing the level of serotonin. Studies have shown that during depression, the amount of serotonin, or happy hormone, produced by the body is very low. To cope, you increase it by taking some drugs called SSRI or selective serotonin uptake inhibitor. You may also be prescribed with drugs that take care of your nervous system. Depression often makes you antsy and irritable. It also causes your heart to beat a lot faster and your nerves to tense. The drugs can help calm or relax you.

Exposure Therapy

It's not enough that you are dependent on medications alone. A lot of these require prescriptions, which means they are very strong drugs. If you take them often, you will develop immunity to them until they'll no longer work. You will be forced to increase the dosage. There are a number of depressed people who later became substance abusers.

That's why you need to complement the medications with different types of therapies. One of these is called exposure therapy. As its name suggests, it's a process where you are exposed to the triggers of your depression. The purpose is to allow you to beat it head-on.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

To put this simply, it's changing the way your mind thinks. One of the reasons why it's very hard for you to kick depression out of your life is you are still trapped in a negative mind-set. You believe that there's no hope for you and that you cannot settle whatever it is that's causing your depression.

Cognitive behavior therapy helps change that. Instead of saying, "I cannot," you will be taught on how to say, "I can."

Almost always therapists use the power of subliminal messages or affirmations. These are referred to as positive statements that greatly influence your subconscious. Since you don't have any control over your subconscious mind, you cannot filter out information, and your mind accepts whatever message you feed to it. And though it's not commonly utilized, the subconscious mind can influence the way your conscious mind processes information.

Some of the common subliminal messages used in depression are the following:

I am a receiver of light and love.

I accept peace and order in my life.

I let go of the past and live in the present.

When I look back, I realize there are a lot of things to thank for.

The good thing about affirmations is you can continue with your therapy even if you're not in your therapist's office. You can already download these subliminal messages to your mp3 player or iPod.
