Best Tips on Reading Fast

Best Tips on Reading Fast

Have you encountered people who can read so fast they can finish a book within a day, or they can perform an extensive research in less than an hour? They are practicing what you call speed reading. As its name suggests, it means reading something at a faster speed than the others. What others can accomplish in days they do so in hours.

There are plenty of reasons why you should consider adopting speed reading. First, you don't have all the time in the world to read. Your time is extremely limited. So if you know how to speed read, you cover plenty of topics in a short amount of time. Second, it makes you efficient. It frees up some of your time, which you can use for other productive activities. Third, it enhances knowledge. The more subjects you read, the more you become an informed person.

Here are some secrets to speed reading:

Avoid reading every word. Since you're young, you're taught to read every word, from left to right. The problem is this is extremely time-consuming. Not a lot of people are aware that your eyes can actually cover a lot of words in one glance, as many as five words. Thus, you may want to read the words in chunks instead. It also works to your advantage since the brain can process ideas better if it's presented with a group of words.

Don't regress. What does this mean? Have you experienced going back to the same line or word over and over, believing that you have not really picked up the text's real meaning? Again, it's a waste of time. You may find yourself getting stuck at something for such a long time. It may even worsen the reading process as information can get jumbled, or the re-reading will disrupt the structure or flow of the text.

You need to make an effort not to re-read the lines or prevent the urge to do so. If you think you're prone to omitting lines and words, you can make use of pointers, which can be a finger, a ruler, or any other object. You can use it to guide your eyes as you read.

Relax yourself. The more pressure you give yourself to speed read, the lesser the chance you can actually accomplish it. When you are so tensed, you will lose your concentration, which is highly needed in speed reading. You will also experience an ineffective coordination of the eyes. You will lose the ability to look at the words in your peripheral vision. Your face will start to tighten too.

Before you read something, make sure that you're prepared for it. You can utilize subliminal messages at this point. You can tell yourself, "I am going to focus all my energy into what I'm reading" or "I am blocking anything that would disrupt me during my reading." Since affirmations are already available in wide variety of formats, including videos and mp3s, it's much easier for you to receive these subliminal messages.
